Peterhof and Alexandria

Parks, palaces and fountains ensemble of Peterhof (Petrodvorets) is a kind of a triumphal monument remembering a successful ending of Russia's fight to the access to the Baltic Sea. Peterhof, located 29 kilometers from St. Petersburg, is its suburb. Petrodvorets has regular parks, 144 fountains and 3 cascades, gilded statues of gods and antique heroes; splendid architecture of its palaces is a monument of a great artistic value. The landscaped park of Alexandria is located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland to the east of the Lower Park. Alexandria was conceived and constructed in the second half of the 19th century as an Imperial summer residence, the private possession of the Romanovs family. In August 1825 Emperor Alexander I presented this land to his brother Nicholas, who was crowned Emperor four months later and made a present of it to his wife Alexandra, after whom the estate is named.
